At first there was just Smart College Visit. Created in 2010 by Kelly Queijo, SCV became an award-winning website for college-bound teens and their families to search for colleges and plan campus visits. It includes college profile pages and travel logistics to more than 3,000 U.S. colleges, an extensive college advice and college-prep blog, interviews with college admission and college financial planning experts, and a wealth of personal stories from other parents, students, interns and even our own team.

Then we added Smart College Consulting, offering one-on-one help for students preparing for college.

But were we adding a brand, or a company? We realized it was really a brand.

Additionally, in the background, we were doing work for colleges and universities to strengthen and communicate their brands and messages. But was that Visit or Consulting?

Let’s also add some new people to the mix while we’re at it, just to make it more fun.

And as such, we needed to define the work that we do as a whole. Because not everything we do fits into Smart College Visit or Smart College Consulting.

That’s where Smart College Group came into play.


Our combined 40+ years of higher education and corporate experience is tailor-made to create communications plans to track and attract the best students for college and universities.

Kelly Queijo, Founder and President

Kelly Queijo

Expertise: Relationship marketing

A Virginia Tech alumna, Kelly held the position of Undergraduate Admissions Marketing and Public Relations Coordinator for Virginia Tech from 1993-2000. She is the former Director of i-Recruitment Services for Carnegie Communications and Internet Sales Manager for CollegeNET, both of which provide web-based recruitment and application services to college admissions offices. Kelly is an Act-on Marketing Automation Certified User.


Amy Widner, VP of Operations

Expertise: Communications and organization

Amy is a college admissions marketing strategist; creative content developer with more than 20 years writing and editing experience in corporate and higher ed communication, earned a B.A. in English from Virginia Tech, and is an unabashed grammar expert.

Expertise: Demographic marketing

Kiley holds a B.A. and M.A. in English from Virginia Tech. She’s worked in higher education in Undergraduate Admissions, Alumni Relations and Annual Giving at Virginia Tech, corporate marketing at United Pet Group, and entertainment and social media for Tribune Media. She’s obsessed with IP Targeting. She’s a long distance relationship pro, 6-time breast cancer 3-Day walker, coffee addict, wanderlust sufferer and mommy.
